"For years I've experienced great joy taking photos" then my old camera started doing interesting things. Light was coming into the camera making wonder filled images. It isn't something I can ask my camera to do at will, it takes time, patience, and just the right light. However, it is possible to stop these "light leaks" and get normal photos. I have taken pictures along my travels from Carmel to Sedona and on to the Rockies.
